Comprehensive Eye Exams for Your Eye Health
A comprehensive (medical) eye exam goes beyond checking your glasses prescription. It gives your doctor a closer look at your eye health and helps identify changes that may require medical care, monitoring, or additional testing.
Comprehensive eye exams are important if you are experiencing symptoms, have a history of eye disease, have certain health conditions, or have concerns about changes in your vision. A medical exam is also important for patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of eye disease, or previous eye surgery.
Depending on your needs, your comprehensive eye exam may include:
- Vision and eye health testing
- Eye pressure measurements
- Evaluation of the front and back of the eye
- A review of your medical and family eye health history
- Screening for cataracts, glaucoma, retinal conditions, macular degeneration, and other eye diseases
- Dilation to help your doctor examine the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels inside the eye
- Additional imaging or diagnostic testing, when appropriate
