What is PRK?

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a type of refractive surgery that uses an ultraviolet excimer laser to reshape the front surface of the eye, specifically the cornea. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped structure that helps bend light, allowing it to focus accurately on the retina and enhancing visual clarity. Unlike LASIK, which involves creating a flap in the deeper layers of the cornea, PRK only removes the outer epithelial layer and reshapes the underlying corneal stroma. The epithelial layer naturally regrows over several days, meaning no permanent flap is created.

LASIK Candidacy: Is It Right for Your Eyes?

PRK is a great option for those seeking to reduce reliance on glasses or contact lenses. Ideal candidates generally:

  1. Are 18 or older with stable vision prescriptions
  2. Have refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism
  3. Do not have significant corneal disease or active eye infections
  4. Have thin corneas or irregular corneal anatomy
  5. May suffer from chronic dry eye
  6. Those with active lifestyles or professions at risk for eye trauma (e.g., contact sports)
  7. Are committed to the healing process and follow-up schedule

A thorough evaluation by an ophthalmologist or corneal specialist is necessary to determine true candidacy and tailor the treatment.
